Meetings To Help Wake Parents With Student Assignment Choices

Wake County Public School System updated the web site for its new student assignment plan Friday.

On Monday, the district began a series of information sessions designed to walk parents through the process.

The new plan requires families to choose, based on their address, among a list of schools they would want to attend.

Families are supposed to have a choice of at least five elementary, two middle, and two high schools based

Bus drops kindergartner off without supervision

A local school bus driver has been fired after dropping a kindergartner off at a bus stop without any parental supervision.

Last Wednesday, 5-year-old Justin Chappell was let off the school bus in front of his Raeford home. His mother wasn’t standing there waiting for him and the driver said she assumed she was inside.

Miss. Middle School Bars Black Students From Running For Class President

After 30 years of barring black students from running for class president, a Mississippi public middle school, reversed a Jim Crow era policy today and announced students of all races would be allowed to run for student government.

Students at Nettleton Middle School looking to run for class president, previously needed to maintain a B average, obtain 10 signatures from their classmates – and be white.

Another Option for Wake County School Assignments?

The Wake County student assignment committee got a lesson about a school assignment concept called “controlled choice.”

The plan divides the school system into zones, each one designed to represent the system as a whole. Parents would choose schools in rank-order preference.

Mass Demonstration By NAACP And Others Against Wake Co School Board Tomorrow

Leaders of the NAACP and African Methodist Episcopal Zion Churches of the Eastern District continue to encourage other civic, religious, parent and student groups to take part in a mass demonstration Tuesday against the Wake County Board of Education’s planned policy change that they say will lead to resegregated schools.
