Hurricane Sandy has already grounded more than 3,000 flights.

According to Flightaware, more than 700 flights were canceled on Sunday alone, and almost 2,500 are already canceled for Monday.

Officials are warning travelers to expect delays and cancellations to the northeast for the next several days.

At RDU, crowds are packing airline counters as frustrated travelers try to find a way to get home.

“They seem to be shutting down New York,” said traveler Leah Stamatiades. “So, I have no train, no bus, no subway. I guess that means no airline. And so I won’t be getting out of here until Tuesday at 11:15.”

Shaughn Nechin is headed back to New York.

He too will have to wait until Tuesday for a flight home.

“There’s always errands and things I need to get done,” said Nechin. “You know. I got plenty of things I could be doing. But it’s not going to happen.”

If you’re looking for another way to get to the Northeast, good luck. Amtrak has also canceled trains across the region.
