Quincy Jones could soon testify in the civil case against Bill Cosby if the accusers’ attorney has his way. He filed a motion Monday to depose Jones, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Joseph Cammarata, the lawyer representing Tamara Green and six other women, believes Jones may know a few things about Cosby’s alleged pattern of sexual assault. What’s more, Cammarata said it’s urgent that the deposition take place soon because of Jones’s age (he turns 83 later this month) and health, noting that two other possible witnesses have died, the celebrity news site reports.
Green and several other women accused the besieged comedian of defaming them and allowing his representatives to humiliate them publicly by branding their accounts of sexual assault untrue.
Cosby’s attorney wants to delay not only Jones’ possible deposition, but also the entire proceeding. Lawyer Christopher Taybac asked to put the civil case on hold while Cosby addresses his criminal case. He argued that testimony in the civil case has already harmed Cosby’s constitutional right against self-incrimination.
Cammarata’s motion says the requested delay is simply a legal tactic. He argues that the court should allow “third parties,” like Jones, to testify during any delays, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The site quotes his motion:
“Staying discovery addressed to defendant while allowing third-party discovery to progress will address any substantial claim of prejudice that defendant has, because it will obviate his need to invoke the Fifth Amendment.”
Cammarata is also seeking documents or testimony from Cosby’s former attorneys Martin D. Singer and John P. Schmitt, his publicist David Brokaw, and his talent agency William Morris Endeavor.
