There is a petition with more than 40,000 signatures circling in South Carolina to remove the African-American monument from the Statehouse grounds in response to the removal of the Confederate Flag, accordingt o Raw Story.

The man who started the petition, Keith Harmon, doesn’t feel that the Confederate flag should have been removed in response to the Charleston Massacre, in which 9 African-Americans were gunned down at Bible study by Dylan Roof.

According to the petition, the Confederate flag was removed from statehouse grounds because it offends African-Americans. In response, the African-American monument should be removed because it offends whites.

“The African American Monument depicts slave ships, mistreatment and words such as ‘segregation’ and ‘Jim Crow,’” the petition states. “This being the case, it is undeniable that this monument can and does serve to invoke in the white community feelings of shame, humiliation and offense, serving as a constant reminder of the dark history of slavery.”
