Both directions of NC-147 are closed between Ellis Road and Briggs Avenue in Durham due to downed power lines.
It’s anticipated that the Durham Freeway could be closed for HOURS. The lines reportedly fell around 4 a.m., according to WTVD.
Authorities haven’t revealed what caused the problems. The Durham Freeway is expected to reopen around noon.
In addition, some traffic lights near the area are out and Duke Energy reports about 1200 customers are without power.
Officers have blocked off the on and off ramps to the highway and are rerouting drivers from Ellis Road to Angier Avenue and Briggs Avenue to E. Pettigrew Street.
The closure has quickly caused traffic backups. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
