Johnathan Watkins, a member of The Boys Mentoring Network in Raleigh learned that the WIC program was going to be disbanded due to the current government shut down. Johnathan reached out to his mentor, Wade Harris, founder of The Boys Mentoring Network with an idea to help babies in the Raleigh area to continue receiving food. Johnathan wanted to create a baby food drive and Mr. Harris agreed to help by getting the word out through his personal training business and through his network of community leaders.

Several days later, Johnathan learned that the WIC program was in-fact going to remain funded. But given the uncertainty of government programs like WIC, this did not deter him. Johnathan knows the current funding may only be a temporary solution.

Johnathan is working actively in the community, his church, his school and with Mr. Harris to collect as many baby food items as possible. His plan is to continue the baby food drive and personally deliver items he has collected to the WIC program at the end of October. He is accepting monetary donations, diapers, wipes, formula, infant cereal, animal crackers, graham crackers and applesauce. All items should be sealed. Please – No loose glass or plastic jars of baby food as they

will have to be discarded due to health regulations

“Johnathan is a very special member of my program”, said Harris. “He has grown into a wonderful young man who can appreciate life’s struggles. ”  Harris has been working with Johnathan for almost 2 years to get his weight and health under control. He is 16 and has lost over 80 pounds and continues to work very hard to maintain healthy eating and follow a strenuous exercise program.  Johnathan has completely changed his life for the better by making sacrifices to achieve greatness. He also wants to give back to his community by ensuring babies receive a healthy start with good nutrition.  “Johnathan is an inspiration to everyone he meets”, said Harris, “when he came to me with this idea, I immediately knew I would do everything within my power to help him.”  Please join the effort to help Johnathan see his dream of helping the WIC program come true and supporting mothers and children who depend on WIC.
