Philadelphia native Frankie Beverly started the group in 1970 as Raw Soul. In 1971 they relocated to the San Francisco Bay area, where they met Marvin Gaye; Marvin took them on the road as his opening act and in 1976 he suggested a name change to Maze and later that year the group signed with Capitol Records.
