Today is Patti Labelle’s birthday, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Henry and Bertha Holte. Her birth name is Patricia Louise Holte. This Grammy Award winning American singer, author and actress has spent over 50 years in the music industry. Ms. Patti spent 16 years as lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, the group later changed their name to Labelle in the early 1970s and released the iconic disco song, “Lady Marmalade”.

In the 50 years since Patti LaBelle started in show business, a lot of singers have tried to imitate the vocal stylings of the R&B diva, with her unique combination of jazzy phrasing, gospel passion and pop drama, there’s only one Patti. When you attend a Patti concert she definitely sings and performs from the heart.

Here’s one of my favorite videos.
