The family of Dwight Errington Myers, aka, Heavy D, the rapper and 90s Hip-Hop icon who died last week, released a statement calling him “a kind and giving spirit.”

The statement, the first released by the family, comes just days before Myers funeral, scheduled for Friday and to be held at the historic Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, New York. Myers, 44, collapsed outside of his home and died at a Los Angeles hospital.

“Hev had great love for his family and friends; he was a kind and giving spirit who extended and shared himself with everyone who crossed his path,” the statement read. “He had a heart of gold, was approachable, very personable and gave of himself willingly and unconditionally.
