North Carolina’s flu death toll stood at 14 this season after three more deaths this week, and public health officials urged people to get flu shots, wash their hands and take other preventative measures.

Six of this year’s flu deaths were among children, when usually one or two will die from the virus, said Zack Moore, epidemiologist for the state Department of Health and Human Services.

“Every flu season is different, and this one is certainly severe,” Moore said.
