Chatham County is seeking individuals to apply for several vacancies on its advisory committees. Service on committees is a great way for residents to have a voice on issues of interest and make a difference in the community. The application deadline is Friday, August 22, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.


Some vacancies are specific to geographic areas aligned with county commissioner districts. A map of commissioner districts is on the Chatham County website. Residents also can look up their commissioner district for their address on the NC State Board of Elections website.

Agriculture Advisory Board: This board advises the Board of Commissioners on agricultural issues and related land use issues and reviews applications for farm properties to be designated as a Voluntary Agriculture District to make sure they meet state requirements.

The Agriculture Advisory Board has two At-Large vacancies expiring June 30, 2026, and June 30, 2028.

Climate Change Advisory Committee: This committee advises the Board of Commissioners related to climate change impacts in Chatham County. It also looks at such concepts as: reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (primarily CO2) with related improvements in air quality; promoting the use of renewable energy, promoting carbon neutral/green building standards for new and existing buildings (both public and private), and encouraging resilient conservation–oriented land uses and both residential and commercial land development standards that foster climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The Climate Change Advisory Committee has an At-Large vacancy expiring on February 28, 2028.

Community Advisory Committee: This committee serves as a central point for fostering increased community involvement in adult care homes and nursing homes.

The Community Advisory Committee for Nursing and Adult Care Homes has several vacancies.

Environmental Review Advisory Committee: This committee advises the Chatham County Board of Commissioners on environmental policy and related county ordinances, and it serves as the Chatham County Watershed Review Board.

The Environmental Review Advisory Committee has a District 3 recommended vacancy expiring February 28, 2028.

Library Advisory Committee: This committee advises library staff on the operation of the county’s public libraries. Primary goals are representing and responding to current library needs and issues and promoting the use of library services and programs by all residents.

The Library Advisory Committee has an At-Large vacancy expiring February 28, 2027.

Transportation Advisory Committee: This committee identifies and studies transportation issues and makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners. This advisory committee will meet only as needed to accomplish the purposes that include providing input into the development of the County’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan every five to 10 years as the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) requests; providing input into NCDOT’s transportation project prioritization process within the county; major transportation projects or related issues of concern as assigned by the Board of Commissioners, Planning Department, or TAC Chairs.

The Transportation Advisory Committee has two vacancies, one District 4 recommended vacancy expiring February 28, 2027, and one At-Large member expiring February 28, 2028.

Zoning Board of Adjustment: This board holds hearings and makes decisions for appeals and variances of the county land use and development regulations. All applicants should live outside any of the town limits and extraterritorial districts of the incorporated towns in Chatham County. The board meets as needed, which may be infrequent, meeting once over several years. Candidates must commit to extensive training with the county attorney.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment has two vacancies, one District 3 recommended vacancy expiring June 30, 2029, and one District 5 recommended vacancy expiring June 30, 2029.
