We just made a new best friend, in our head. Insecure actress and comedian Yvonne Orji, who plays the complex Molly Carter, is fantastic in her HBO role. But in person, she’s even more cool and engaging.
The 32-year-old stopped by Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club on Thursday to discuss her role in the show, being a Nigerian-American in Hollywood, and her dating life. But, as expected, the overzealous Charlemagne was most intrigued by Orji’s virgin status. And by virgin, she means: NEVER been touched.
“I’m a virgin, virgin,” she says when asked. “I had planned to have sex by the time I turned 18. I knew the dude, I was like, it’s on and popping. And then I got to college at 17… and then I got saved.”
Adding, “There was a woman on campus who did the bible study. She was a med student, she was beautiful and when I heard it I was like, ‘Do what?!’ And she was like 26. She was a virgin too. And she was like, ‘I want to honor him, it’s the least that I could do.’ And I’m real competitive —I have three older brothers— I don’t know why that was the thing I was competitive about. But I was like, ‘She can do it. I can do it.’ I wasn’t thinking. In my mind I was thinking hopefully I’ll get married at 25. But at 32, I’m like, ‘But God though, I think I’ve done everything right.’”
She went on to talk about dating challenges and how she films those steaming sex scenes on the hit show.
“I’m a dancer. I’m African, so I know how to [makes dance movement with shoulders]. I keep a body roll in my front pocket. All day. And so, we’re doing the scene in rehearsal and I’m a little offbeat. Again, I grew up with three brothers, so I take charge. So the lady, Di, who works in wardrobe, she told me to come over. And says, ‘Y’all are offbeat. So what’s not gonna happen is this going on, on camera.’ So she takes me to the bathroom and was like, ‘You gotta let the man lead.’ So she gets behind me and I start practicing [chuckles]. And was like, ‘Go call him [actor in scene] in the bathroom!’”
In addition to being a hilarious person, the George Washington University graduate sells celibacy shirts on her website, Rock Your Stance. She’s also the creator of The FirstGen Show, that highlights the hilarities of being a Nigerian-American.
“For me, I just stuck to school,” she said about how her parents raised her. “I thought you can’t be bullied and dumb, so books and I will be friends.”
And clearly, all that intelligence paid off.
HBO’s Insecure was just signed on for a second season, but in the meantime, you can watch every Sunday at 10:30EST.
