▪ A community service is at 11 a.m. at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, in the Veterans Garden. There will be music, refreshments and a balloon release. Bring a chair or blanket.

▪ A wreath-laying ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Capitol grounds off Edenton Street. The Tar Heel Detachment #733 of the Marine Corps League will host guest speaker Lt. Gen. Robert R. Ruark, Military Deputy to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. Music will be provided by Pam Saulsby, the St. Francis Brass Quartet and bagpiper Robert White.

▪ Historic Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Ave., will hold a ceremony at 4 p.m. at the cemetery’s Veterans’ Field of Honor. Dr. Charles Harr, a retired Navy Rear Admiral and cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at WakeMed Hospital, will be the keynote speaker. Music by the U.S. Army Ground Forces Band Brass Quintet. Wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans.

▪ The Town of Cary hosts a Memorial Day ceremony honoring veterans from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Veterans Freedom Park, 1513 N. Harrison Ave. Featured speakers are Army veteran Ronnie Sadowski, founder and president of North Carolina’s Wags 4 Tags, and Retired Army Col. Matt Segal, president of the Triangle Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. The Cary Town Band will perform. Parking available across the street at Cary Academy, 1500 N. Harrison Ave.

▪ Cary American Legion Post 67 holds its annual Memorial Day service 10 to 11 a.m. at the post, 8523 Chapel Hill Road, Cary. The guest speaker will be retired Rear Adm. Steve Glass of Cary. Bring a chair. Following the service, refreshments will be provided.

▪ VFW Post 10225 and its auxiliary will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh.

▪ Holly Springs will host a service at 10 a.m. at the DG War on Terror Memorial, 600 Bikram Drive.

▪ A free celebration, hosted by Hope Baptist Church, is 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., at 3721 Quarry Road, Wake Forest. There will be free barbecue, military vehicle rides, music, children’s activities, Dan the Animal Man and a parade.

▪ A ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m. at Garner’s Veterans Memorial at Lake Benson Park, 921 Buffaloe Road. The event is hosted by the town, the Garner American Legion and VFW Post 10225. Call 919-779-6314 or go to vfw10225.org.

▪ Cambridge Village of Apex, 10000 Cambridge Village Loop, will hold a Memorial Day Service at 10:30 a.m.

▪ The Orange County Peace Coalition is hosting “Hearing the Voiceless: Refugees at Home and Abroad,” a commemoration for victims of war, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Extraordinary Ventures, 200 S. Elliott Road, Chapel Hill. Human rights activist Manzoor Cheema, co-founder of the Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia, will speak at the event.

▪ A Memorial Day observance begins at 11 a.m. inside the Johnston County Courthouse on Market Street in downtown Smithfield. Sherill Stevens of Selma, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II will speak.

▪ A Memorial Day service is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. at the Princeton Veterans Memorial on West Railroad Avenue, Princeton. Retired Col. Randy Hinton will speak. Bring lawn chairs.
