Today, we celebrate one of the most popular and iconic performers in music’s history. Legendary vocalist, actor, musician, producer and songwriter Prince (born Prince Rogers Nelson) turns 56 today, so let’s party like it’s 1999.
The first time I saw Prince perform was at a music industry convention in the early 90’s. He was all over the stage playing effortlessly blending elements of R&B, funk, jazz, soul, rock, blues, New Wave and even Hip Hop. He’s a musical and instrumental icon that pioneered the “Minneapolis sound”. Prince is influenced by a wide array of talent including the late James Brown, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix on down to Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Sly & The Family Stone. His impact on the music industry has sparked and encouraged the musical prowess of today’s top artists like Lenny Kravitz, Raheem DeVaughn and Van Hunt just to name a few.
It’s reported that he has more than one thousand songs in his music vault. Prince has won a total of seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, a Billboard award and an Academy Award for his great work. He has repeatedly made the list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame back in 2004, the very first year he was eligible.
April 2014, fans were elated to hear that a new album was in the works, an expanded 30th anniversary edition of Purple Rain will be released and the Purple One has re-signed with his former label, Warner Bros. Prince has also gained the rights to his master recordings from the 80’s.
Happy Birthday Prince
