Town of Pittsboro Alerts Public to Phishing Scam
The Town of Pittsboro is alerting the public to a phishing scam that is targeting individuals who have worked with the Development Services Department.
Customers who have submitted rezoning and major subdivision applications have reported receiving fraudulent emails requesting wire transfers for permit application fees. These messages are not legitimate and were not sent by the Town of Pittsboro. The Pittsboro Police Department was notified of the scam on Monday, August 24, 2026, and is actively investigating.
What the public needs to know:
- The only valid way to pay Town of Pittsboro permit fees, other than paying in person at Town Hall, is through the official OpenGov permitting portal: https://chathamcountync.portal.opengov.com/categories/1085
- Individuals who are unsure about a payment request should verify the request by logging into their OpenGov account through the portal above or by contacting Development Services staff through the Town’s website directory: https://www.pittsboronc.gov/m/directory
- Do not send payment, click links, or open attachments contained in suspicious or unexpected emails.
- Anyone who receives one of these fraudulent messages should report it immediately to the Pittsboro Police Department and should not provide payment or personal information.
