20th Annual NC Juneteenth Events in Raleigh-Durham

This year marks an extraordinary celebration for the Raleigh-Durham, NC area, as the 20th annual North Carolina Juneteenth Celebration, organized by Spectacular Magazine, takes center stage. This milestone event brings together culture, history, and community pride with three days of impactful gatherings from June 19 to June 21. Phyllis Coley, the driving force behind Spectacular Magazine, shared an in-depth look at the plans during a recent interview.

The festivities begin on Thursday, June 19, with a historic event at Shaw University. For the first time in Raleigh’s history, the Juneteenth flag will fly over the university campus. The program kicks off at 11 a.m., with Adrienne Nerdy, Director of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission, delivering a keynote speech exploring the significance of Juneteenth and its roots in the state. Adding to this momentous occasion is Shaw University’s own milestone celebration of 160 years.

On Friday, June 20, the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham will host an inaugural Juneteenth Gospel Concert. This event highlights the shared milestone of Hayti’s 50th anniversary and Juneteenth’s 20th celebration, making it a night of unity and spiritual upliftment.

Finally, on Saturday, June 21, the celebration culminates with a vibrant festival from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at North Carolina Central University. Set in the Latham Surface lot, the festival promises entertainment for all ages, including live music, line dancing, a health fair, food trucks, vendors, and children’s activities. Phyllis Coley expressed her excitement about returning to the campus, where the first celebration took place 20 years ago―a fitting full-circle moment.
