Kamala Harris is #BlackGirlMagicpersonified.
While most of were cringing at the results on November 8th 2016, the state of California gave us a glimmer of hope after naming Harris, its Attorney General, as only the second black woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate. But this isn’t her first time making history in politics. She was also the first Indian-American ever elected to the Senate.
Just how monumental was her win? There hasn’t been a black female senator since 1999.
The 52-year-old ran on a platform of criminal justice and immigration reform, creating good-paying jobs, enacting family leave and equal pay policies, college affordability and universal pre-kindergarten for children and tackling climate change.
Harris attended Howard University as a political science/economics major and was a member of the debate team, fitting for a future politician.
Here are four more facts about Kamala:
1. She spent six years as a California’s Attorney General.
2. She’s an advocate for marriage equality
3.Kamala is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
4. She married fellow Attorney Doug Emhoff in 2014.
