At last week’s Democratic convention Khizr Khan gave a moving tribute to his son who lost his life in 2004 in Iraq serving this country.

During the same speech, Khan also had some very harsh words for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump.

“Donald Trump you are asking Americans to trust you with their future. Let me ask you have you ever read the US constitution?”

Then Khizr Kahn went on to offer his own pocket sized constitution to Donald Trump.

Donald Trump responded by saying that Ghazala Khan the mother of a dead war hero was not “allowed” to speak during the Democratic convention – implying that her religion (Islam) prevented her from doing so.

In a TV interview, Khizr Khan later said his wife didn’t speak because it was just too painful.

As is usually the case with Trump, he responded on twitter by writing:

“Mr. Khan, who does not know me, viciously attacked me from the stage of the DNC and is now all over T.V. doing the same – Nice!”

Another tweet read:

“This story is not about Mr. Khan, who is all over the place doing interviews, but rather RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM and the U.S. Get smart!”

Kahn told me last night that on CNN that he didn’t want to even address Trump personally but offered this advice to his supporters:.

“I am saddened to see the lack of empathy for the people that this candidate wishes to lead… it is that… without that empathy, without that moral compass we have seen leaders in the history that have come to power with no empathy for people and no moral compass and history does not look at them kindly. And my nation deserves better.”

Khan says despite what you may fear, in the end he believes the people of America will vote their conscience and elect a uniter instead of a divider.

Some conservatives and Trump supporters have tried to paint Khan and his wife as political operatives, but he tells me nothing could be further from the truth – that he has voted for both Democrats and Republicans depending on the candidate.

Most Republican leaders however have denounced Trump’s criticism of the Khan family.

Arizona Senator and former P.O.W. John McCain wrote:

“In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s parents. He has suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the United States — to say nothing of entering its service. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement. I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates.”

McCain went on to say:

“While our Party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us.”

Illinois GOP Representative Adam Kinzinger, an Iraq war veteran wrote:

“No one can truly understand the sacrifice a family makes when their loved one serves their country or the heartbreak of losing a loved one. There’s no greater love than a man who lays down his life for his friends.”

“As a military man myself, I have deep respect for the sacrifices made by anyone who is willing to defend the Constitution. Comments disparaging our service men and women, and their families, are deeply disturbing and wholly unpatriotic.”

They all stop short though of renouncing their support for Trump as a candidate – something Mr. Kahn has called on them to do.
