ESPN analyst, host of First Take and sports Journalist Stephen A. Smith will be a featured speaker at the 2016 Black Male Summit in Akron, Ohio this weekend alongside Roland Martin and Tavis Smiley. He talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about his roots in journalism, his love for mentoring young men and why he doesn’t mind being the most hated in sports broadcasting.

On his experience with mentorship:

“You’ve got to make contributions to your community and obviously I’m incredibly concerned with what’s going on with our young black men. I’m always going to have my eyes on what’s going on in our community,” Smith said.

What advice does he give to young men?

“You’ve got to be about this business of doing what you’re supposed to do. You can’t take shortcuts. The obstacles are going to be there but the excuses better be far and few in between and nobody cares.”
