For some singer Andra Day exploded over night, but the 30-year-old will quickly tell you that couldn’t be further from the truth. Equal parts cool and uniquely refreshing, the California beauty has accomplished what many artists only dream about, her debut album Cheers To The Fall was nominated for two Grammy’s last month. And before that, she went on tour with Lenny Kravitiz, appeared in Vogue and Apple Music’s Holiday commercial.

She talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about her performance at the White House to pay tribute to the legendary Ray Charles (watch below at the 2:01:08 mark) and being discovered by Stevie Wonder.

“Last night was magical. I was incredible. Everybody was just…the level of talent was incredible. There was excitement and a bit of somberness because it’s the last event like this of his term,” she said.

How she got her big break:

“Just a few years ago, Stevie Wonder and Kai Miller saw me in front of a strip mall and reached out to me and said he liked my voice and wanted to write with me.’
