Between the World and Me, a novel penned by author Ta-Nehisi Coates, has been nominated for a National Book Award. The novel, which delves into the history of racism and discrimination in the United States, is one of the ten non-fiction books being considered for the prize. Famed writer Toni Morrison once described the book as “required reading” to understand the context of how racism has plagued our country. Coates has been very vocal about race relations. Recently, he tackled the probe of the Black family in his latest piece for The Atlantic titled, “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration.” Read more.
Maya Angelou’s Art Collection Brings in $1.3M
Art that belonged to the late Maya Angelou sold for nearly $1.3 million earlier this week. Almost 50 pieces of her art collection were auctioned off by her estate. The items included a painted story quilt hung in her Harlem home, which sold for $461,000. The quilt was originally a gift from Oprah Winfrey for Angelou’s 61st birthday. Another piece, titled “The Obeah’s Choice,” was painted by notable artist Romare Bearden and sold for $87,500. “Just as Dr. Angelou continues to serve as a source of inspiration for countless artists, writers and performers, she also found inspiration in the works of others,” said her son. R. Kelly’s ‘Trapped in the Closet’ Revived as On-Stage Production
R&B singer/songwriter R. Kelly is reviving one of his most popular projects. The crooner is bringing back his “Trapped in the Closet” series as a live stage production with a 20-piece orchestra. Like the video series, the stage show will depict a story of lies, sex, and deception. “Trapped in the Closet Live” will play at The Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ on Halloween. Anthony D’Amato will serve as Producing Artistic Director. Read more.
Toni Braxton Biopic Coming to Lifetime
Lifetime has had more misses than hits when it comes to producing biopics. The network’s adaptations on the lives of late singers Aaliyah and Whitney Houston rated high in viewership, but were harshly criticized in terms of accuracy. The network will now try yet again to bring the story of another R&B icon to television–Toni Braxton. The movie, titled Unbreak My Heart: The Toni Braxton Story, will show Braxton’s rise in the music industry. It will also feature her sisters, producer Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Pebbles, and industry mogul LA Reid. No word yet on the biopic’s release date. Read more.
