Deanna Brown Thomas, the daughter of the legendary James Brown, is bringing the James Brown Academy of Musik Pupils, also known as the J.A.M.P. Masters to the 2015 Tom Joyner Family Reunion!

She talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about what to expect from the group and how they’re keeping her father’s legacy alive.

“We’ve got 12 kids and we’ve got some surprises for you. They range from 8 years old to 18 years old. It’s been a fantastic ride with these kids. My dad always talked about keeping music in the schools in the early 90’s,” Brown Thomas said. “He always talks about how important it was to keep music in the schools and when we don’t they’re killing each other and unfortunately we’ve got to see that every day,” she says. “I’m just so indebted to Keith Jenkins, lead guitarist for my dad who came in and taught them. They didn’t get it directly from my dad, but they got it from someone who got it directly from my dad.”

The show includes all the James Brown hits you’ve heard from the Godfather himself. Brown Thomas says that although he didn’t live to see it, the Academy is an important part of his legacy. It’s been around for five years now.

“I’ve seen kids literally get better in their life. Grades have come up, behavior has gotten better and they ain’t on the street.”

The group will also participate in Band Camp in Orlando at the Tom Joyner Family Reunion.

“They’re going to have a great experience. We have some great things lined up for them. This is all about education. These kids have gone in the studio and written and produced their own song.”
