Misty Copeland is having a great year. She starred in an Under Armour commercial, was named a principal dancer in the New York City Ballet, appeared in a revival of Our Town on Broadway and she’s now landed an Essence cover. Photographed by Dennis Leupold in a Zimmerman gown, the graceful ballerina maybe one of the magazine’s most beautiful covers ever.
It’s a lot of #BlackGirlMagic and Copeland says in the September cover story that she will continue to represent.
“I’m going to continue to be who I am and my experiences as a Black woman have made me who I am,” says Copeland. “All of a sudden now that I am in this position, I’m not going to say ‘I’m just a dancer.’ It’s a huge deal because I’m a Black woman. That’s why it’s a big deal.”
