Fathers Day, a celebration honoring fathers, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society, was established in the U.S. on July 5, 1908 in West Virginia, to complement Mothers Day.  Sonora Dodd of Spokane Wahington promoterd the celebration of Fathers Day in the 1930’s on a national level, getting the tie, tobacco and pipe industries involved.  In 1966 Pres. Johnson issued the first proclamation honoring fathers and designated the 3rd Sunday in June as Fathers Day.  In 1972 Pres Nixon signed the proclamation into law.
