A Wisconsin police officer who shot and killed a 26-year-old man over the weekend did so on his first day back on duty following the shooting of another man just two weeks prior.
The victim, Aaron Siler of Kenosha, was said to be armed when he was fatally shot by Officer Pablo Torres, the Chicago Tribune reports. Siler was reportedly wanted on a felony warrant when he led police on a chase before he was shot.
Just two weeks before, on March 14, Torres wounded another man who was said to be armed with two knives.
He was placed on leave and returned to work Saturday. He encountered Siler that same day.
“When the suspect was confronted by Officer Pablo Torres, the suspect armed himself with a weapon,” Kenosha police Lt. Brad Hetlet said. “Officer Torres fired his handgun striking and killing the suspect. There were citizen witnesses to the incident.”
“The Kenosha Police Department understands the toll this incident has taken on the family, the community, the involved officers and their families, and the department,” Hetlet said. “These tragedies can be avoided if subjects would simply stop and follow the commands of the officers.”
Torres reportedly underwent training during his two weeks off the job. According to BuzzFeed, the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation has launched an inquiry into the shooting.
As the website points out, this is the second fatal shooting in Wisconsin in the span of a week. On March 6, Officer Matt Kenny shot and killed unarmed teenager Tony Robinson.
