Kevin J. Sullivan is the democratic candidate for the 74th district in the Virginia House of Delegates. Sullivan is challenged by incumbent (I) Delegate Joseph Morrissey and (R) Matt Walton.

There has been much controversy centered around the race for the 74th district in print media.  Delegate Morrissey was asked to resign from the 74th district by Governor Terry McAuliffe and lawmakers. Morrissey resigned only to announced that he would run in the special election on January 13. The Democratic Party of Virginia acted within two days to organize a fire house caucus. Only 100 committee members were allowed to vote for a candidate to represent the democratic party. Committee members voted and selected Sullivan by 24 votes. The other close contender was Henrico County School Board member Lamont Bagby. He received 16 votes.

Sullivan has mentioned in several interviews that he was not happy about the decision to not allow nearly 80,000 people of the 74th to vote. But, he did say voters of the 74th will get an opportunity to vote on January 13, 2015.

During our interview, Sullivan said he wants to raise the minimum wage and expand the Affordable Care Act in Virginia. He said, health and economics are very important factors for growth in the 74th district. Sullivan also said, “I support all efforts to reduce poverty in our community, including achieving employment and pay equity, and raising the minimum wage. We will only secure a living wage for women, who comprise the majority of heads of households at or below the poverty level, by ratifying the ERA.”  Play audio here
