A Fuquay-Varina teenager was pepper-sprayed inside his own home by police Monday.

DeShawn Currie, a black male, lives with a white foster family. He has lived with them for about a year. The family moved to Fuquay-Varina in July. DeShawn came home from school Monday and walked into the house. His mother, Stacy Tyler, had left a door unlocked for him. A neighbor spotted DeShawn entering the house, assumed he was breaking in and called police.

Police entered the home and surprised DeShawn with a confrontation. He says that he tried to explain to police that he lived in the house, but police pointed to photos of the Tyler’s younger children in the home. All of their other children are white. Police assumed that DeShawn didn’t belong in the home.

Police say that DeShawn became belligerent and wouldn’t comply with the officers’ orders, so they pepper-sprayed him.

Police defend their actions and say that the neighborhood has seen recent criminal activity.
