A quick thinking Cary woman stopped two alleged burglars in their tracks.

The men were inside 71-year-old Peggy Adams’ home in the 2600 block of Pink Acres Street allegedly stealing everything from her TV, to her shotgun, and jewelry when she sprang into action.

Adams was out last Thursday, and when she came home she noticed that there was a car running in her carport that obviously wasn’t hers. So, she ran over to the car, took the car keys out of the ignition and a neighbor called 911.

Caller: “They in the car.”

Dispatcher:  “Who is they?”

Caller: “The two robbers.”

Caller:  “We got the keys.  Hurry!”

Caller:  “Baby, they tearing her house up.”

Caller:  “There’s a red car down there. There’s men running in and out of her house and she’s standing out there and I think she’s scared to death.”

Caller:  “They’re running out behind the house now.”

When police arrived, they found Stephen Wayne Eggers and William Anthony Cheatham fighting over who took the car keys. They didn’t realize that they had been outsmarted by the home owner.

“While she was calling us, the folks came out and were looking for the keys of the car and trying to walk away. Obviously, they were trying to take some items,” said Cary Police Capt. Don Hamilton. “[She made a] very bold move. Most of the time, we recommend that you let them take the property they were taking, but it worked out and we’re very impressed by her actions.”

Both men were arrested and charged with a series of crimes from breaking and entering to having a gun as a felon.

Adams’ son told ABC11 that doctors treated and released his mother from the hospital after she suffered a stressed related illness because of the incident.
