RALEIGH – Gov. Bev Perdue is making her stance on fracking clear.

She signed Executive Order No. 118 on Monday, which establishes a task force on fracking.

Perdue said that North Carolina needs “a strong set of standards in place before fracking is allowed in the Tar Heel State.”

If fracking is done safely, it can be part of a larger energy solution to create jobs and help lower energy costs, Perdue said in a statement.

The executive order creates an appointed regulatory work group must report to the governor every six months.

Sen. Bob Rucho, the chairman of the Senate Energy Policy Issues Committee responded to the governor’s executive order: “We are pleased Gov. Perdue shares our goal of creating a vibrant energy jobs sector in North Carolina and agree there needs to be a strong regulatory framework.”

The Environmental Defense Fund said Perdue is right to work with legislators to develop safety regulations.
