Ryan Coogler Breaks Silence on Whether a ‘Sinners’ Sequel Is Happening

Even after Sinners soared at the global box office—raking in over $350 million—director Ryan Coogler says a sequel was never in the cards.

Rumors began swirling last month that a follow-up was already in the works, but Warner Bros. quickly shut those down, confirming that there was no truth to the speculation. Now, Coogler himself has clarified his stance. In an April interview with Ebony Magazine, the filmmaker explained why Sinners was always meant to be a one-and-done experience.
“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit,” Coogler said, referencing his work on Black Panther and the Creed series. “I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me, and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”

He went on to say that Sinners was designed to feel like a complete package from the very beginning. “I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees, and desserts. I wanted all of it there. That was always my intention.”
The film’s ending may leave room for more, but Coogler made it clear that was never his goal. Instead of building a franchise, he wanted to give audiences a satisfying, standalone story with no lingering threads.

Michael B. Jordan, the film’s star and longtime collaborator of Coogler’s, also seemed to understand this vision. While Jordan had once floated the idea of a prequel involving his character’s backstory in Chicago, he made it clear that any future installments would be entirely up to Coogler.

Still, fans haven’t given up hope. As the success of Sinners continues to spark conversation, some are holding out for Coogler to change his mind. But for now, the director is focused on new creative ground. He’s currently developing a reboot of The X-Files and preparing for Black Panther 3.
Interestingly, while Coogler may be stepping away from the vampire genre, Michael B. Jordan isn’t. He’s set to star in a sequel to I Am Legend, which has been in the works at Warner Bros. That project, originally led by Will Smith, offers Jordan another shot at the supernatural—just not in Coogler’s Sinners universe.
So while Sinners 2 isn’t happening anytime soon, both Coogler and Jordan have no shortage of exciting work ahead. And for fans of the original, Sinners stands as a complete, impactful story—just the way its creator intended.
