Journaling isn’t just the habit of writing down the mundane and repetitive events that happen throughout your day. When used creatively and with intention, our journals can be the gateway to meaningful communication with spirit and a deeper understanding of ourselves.

If you’re trying to strengthen your connection with God or raise your spiritual vibration or simply develop a habit of positive thinking, there are easy yet effective journaling techniques that you can start doing today that will help you tap into your innate spiritual wisdom and connect with both your higher power and your higher self.

Write your way to a higher vibration.

Use the following journaling practices to get started or go deeper into your spiritual journey while creating a sacred ritual that will help you better understand yourself and the world around you.

1. Gratitude Journaling

An easy way to raise your spiritual vibration is to simply say “Thank you.” Take a look at your life and the world around you. From beautiful weather to loving friendships to the roof over your head, there’s always something to be grateful for. Take some time every day to write down all your blessings and all the people, places, and moments that filled you with gratitude throughout the day. It may be hard at first but with practice, you’ll see your list and your heart grow.

2. Take Notes

We should never stop learning and being students of life. Our journal can be a great place to take notes on the lessons we’re learning day by day that we want to remember and return to later. You can take notes as you’re listening to a sermon in church. You can jot down a memorable passage of the self-help book you’re reading. You can even start documenting the wise words you may hear from your friends and family. As you fill up the pages with words that encourage and uplift you, your journal can become a sacred text that you return to when you need a little word for your journey.

3. Write Down Your Prayers and Meditations

Praying can be hard. It’s easy to get distracted and lose focus when you’re trying to communicate with your higher power while a million thoughts and worries are swirling around in your brain. If silent prayer and meditation aren’t working for you, try using your journal. You can simultaneously clear space in your mind and effectively communicate with God by writing your prayers out in your journal. Pour your thoughts out on the page, you may even find you feel lighter once you give all your worries, cares, and wants out into the atmosphere. You can use your pen and paper to develop a ritual of consistent communication with God.

4. Manifestation and Visioning

You may have heard of a vision board but how about a vision journal? Our journals can be used in the same way we use poster boards and magazine cut-outs to map out the futures of our dreams. Start out by making a list of your goals, the things you want to call in for your career, your love life, your health, anything you want to have or become. And be specific, your journal is a safe space to be your authentic self. Then you can find images that represent your dream life and paste them within the pages. If you don’t want to get that messy, take your vision list and for each goal, write out the specifics of how you want to feel once you reach that goal. Meditate on what you’ve visioned for in the pages of your journal and watch your dreams come true.

5. Affirmations

You can use your journal as a place to encourage yourself and show yourself some love. Life and death are in the power of the tongue, what we say and think can become our reality, including what we say and think about ourselves. So talk to yourself with kindness and authority. Repeated chants and affirmations are a great way to start believing in who you are and who you want to be. Start with something as simple as “I am…” and fill in the blank with all the things you’re good at, all the positive emotions you feel, all the wonderful things you are. Life is hard enough without beating yourself up along the way. Use your journal to be your own cheerleader. Practice seeing yourself the way God sees you as perfect, loveable, capable and blessed.
