More than 200 state troopers are needed for the department to operate at full capacity. Leaders say they’ve seen at times of emergencies like Hurricane Florence a critical shortage of troopers. NC Highway patrol is kicking off a nationwide search to find the best people for the position.
The salary starts at $37,000 during patrol school, and then increase to $44,000 once patrol school is complete. The top trooper salary is $64,202.

The State Highway Patrol is recruiting people from all over the country. Basic qualifications include:
Applicant must be age 21 on the first day of Patrol School and no more than 39 on the first day of Patrol School.
Applicant must have a High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Certificate
Applicant must be a citizen of the United States
Applicant must have no felony offenses, no class B misdemeanors within the past 5 years and a good driving record
Applicant must have 20/20 vision in each eye or corrected to 20/20. Uncorrected vision can be no more than 20/200 in each eye.
