According to BuzzFeed, the family of Sandra Bland has settled a federal wrongful death suit in the amount of $1.9 million. Bland died in police custody after being arrested and jailed after a traffic stop. She was found hanging in her cell with a trash bag around her neck after three days in custody.
Other aspects of the settlement, according to BuzzFeed, include:
- Pledges from the Waller County judge to seek state legislation to grant increased funding for police training. Any laws that result from the efforts will be named after Bland.
- Significant changes to law enforcement practices, from an on-call nurse stationed at the jail to electronic cell checks.
