Idris Elba, Vivica A. Fox, Morris Chestnut, Michael B. Jordan, Nia Long and Gabrielle Union are now voting members of The Academy and are part of the effort to keep the Oscars from being so white.
After this year’s racial backlash, the Academy decided to switch up its membership and added lots of women and minorities. According to TMZ, 683 new members were added…46% are women and 41% are people of color.
The Academy says the new class reps “the best in our global film community.” It also added this: “We encourage the larger creative community to open its doors wider, and create opportunities for anyone interested in working in this incredible and storied industry.”
