Under a House committee’s bill women would be required to register for the military draft. The measure comes just months after the Defense Department lifted all gender-based restrictions on front-line combat units.
The legislation only passed by a slim two vote margin, with the bill’s main sponsor California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter actually voting against the measure. A much divided Armed Services Committee backed the provision that the full House will consider next month, touching off a contentious debate over the role of women in combat units.
