The Whitney Museum in New York featured Cortor and other 20th Century African-American artists during its inaugural show. Cortor was thankful for the opportunity, but did note that it took longer for these types of showcases to happen. Despite this, the results of Cortor’s 70-year career have been shown at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Brooklyn Museum, among other institutions.

Cortor, who married Sophie Schmidt in 1951, had four children with his wife. He was with his son, Michael Cortor, in Long Island, at the time of his passing.
