TV One Summer 2013 TCA Panel

TV One and The National Cable Television Cooperative are joining forces in a multi-year distribution agreement. Under the partnership, the two enterprises will provide original content for African-Americans throughout the country. “TV One is delighted to begin a multi-year agreement with NCTC,” said Michelle L. Rice, TV One’s executive vice president content distribution and marketing, in a statement. “Establishing this inaugural partnership with NCTC and its approximately 850 member-operators will enable us to continue to provide the critically acclaimed and entertaining content for Black adults in even more communities across the country.”


Eddie Murphy to be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Comedian Eddie Murphy will be recognized for the contributions he’s made to the entertainment industry. At the end of this month, Murphy will be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in Washington D.C. at the Kennedy Center. The award is known as the highest honor for comedians in our country. “We look forward to paying tribute to Eddie Murphy’s important and lasting impact on American culture,” said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter in a statement. “Through his appearances on Saturday Night Live, groundbreaking stand-up comedy, and work as a movie star, Eddie Murphy has shown that like Mark Twain, he was years ahead of his time.” Other notable comedians, including Tracy Morgan, Arsenio Hall, George Lopez, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah, and Jay Pharaoh, will perform during the ceremony. The event will air on November 23rd on PBS. Comedians who have received the award in the past include Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jay Leno. Read more.


Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jay Z, and Others Sue Paris Retailer

A Paris retailer is in hot water after selling merchandise featuring the faces and names of some of today’s hottest stars. ElevenParis is being sued by Beyoncé, Jay Z, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Rihanna for featuring them on their items without permission. According to the lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in New York, the stars are claiming they warned the retailer to stop selling the products. ElevenParis says they’ve had negotiations with the celebrities for nearly a year. “ElevenParis is determined to find a fair and balanced agreement with them and their advisers,” said the retailer in a statement. Some of the pieces in the line feature Beyoncé and Rihanna lyrics and sayings like, “Pharrell is my Brotha,” and “Kanye is my Homie.” Read more.
