The Tom Joyner Morning Show talks to Pamela Alexander, the Director of Community Development for Ford Motor Company Fund & Shade Douglas, (that’s no typo, her name really is Shade), Team Leader for Spelman College, to announce the winner of the Ford HBCU Challenge. Douglas is a junior and Math major from Buffalo, New York, who will earn a dual degree in the Engineering program with a focus on biomedical engineering.

In the Ford HBCU Challenge, schools competed to see who could produce as sustainable idea. Not only is Spelman the top HBCU overall this year, it’s the winner of the Challenge! Congrats to the lovely ladies at Spelman College who won $40, ooo in scholarship money and $25,000 to fund their project.

“Our project was called The Giving Kitchen, which is basically showing families in the West End community, where Spelman is located, how to be self-=sufficient by growing their own garden inside their home,” Douglas says. “We are supplementing material that they don’t have already. Instead of having to go to the corner store to buy unhealthy food with the limited funds they have, they can grow healthy food which is usually more expensive.”

Douglas says the group has partnered with The Atlanta University Center consortium to schedule meetings with the families and continue educating them about growing their own food.

Congratulations To Spelman College, Winner Of The Ford HBCU Challenge  was originally published on blackamericaweb.com
