In the 1960s, a drag racer by the name of Malcolm Durham broke down barriers in drag racing and established himself as the sport’s first black superstar. Durham averaged $800 per appearance making him one of the highest paid drivers in the business.
The former Goldsboro native, got his start working on tractors, he later moved to Washington, D.C., and took automotive courses at a technical trade school and won nearly all of his races setting and breaking records.
