MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry has endured over a week of malicious attacks on social media following a segment on her show last weekend during which she and a panel made jokes about Mitt Romney’s grandson, Kieran Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor finally accepted Harris-Perry’s heartfelt during “Fox News Sunday.”

“I think it’s a heartfelt apology, and I think for that reason we hold no ill will whatsoever,” Romney said.

“I think people recognize, and the folks at MSNBC who have apologized recognize, people like me are fair targets: If you get in the political game, you can expect incoming,” he said. ”For children, that’s beyond the line. I think they understand that and feel that as well.”

As previously reported by NewsOne, CNN greatly exaggerated calls for Harris-Perry’s firing and right-wingers refused to accept her apology. She and one panelist, comedic actress Pia Glenn, continued to be dragged through the mud without a public show of support from MSNBC.

Watch Harris-Perry’s apology below:

“Without reservation of qualification, allow me to apologize to the Romney family,” Harris-Perry said Saturday morning. “Adults who enter into public life implicitly consent to having less privacy, but their families, especially their children, should not be treated callously or thoughtlessly. My intention was not malicious, but I broke the ground rule that families are off-limits. For that, I am sorry.”

“Allow me to apologize to other families formed through transracial adoption,” she continued, “because I am deeply sorry that we suggested that interracial families are in any way funny, or deserving of ridicule. On this program, we are dedicated to advocating for a wide diversity of families, it is one of our core principles. And I am reminded that when we do so, it must be with the utmost respect. We’re genuinely appreciative of everyone who offered serious criticisms of last Sunday’s program, and I am reminded that our fiercest critics can sometimes be our best teachers.”
