A mother in Canada packed lunch for her two daycare-aged children last December. The lunch she packed included leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and milk.
The mom received a $10 fine from the daycare and a note saying that she failed to include a grain component to the lunches. The daycare indicated that they supplemented the lunches with Ritz Crackers to ensure that the children had a well-balanced lunch.
The note the mother received indicated that lunches should include one milk, one meat, one grain and two fruits/vegetables, falling basically in line with the recommended food servings by the Canada Food Guide.
