Raleigh area residents can protect themselves from identity theft by taking part in the America Recycles Day event Saturday, Nov. 16, at North Hills Shopping Center. Not only may residents drop off sensitive documents for shredding and recycling, the event also provides an opportunity to dispose of desktop computers, laptops, small servers, hard drives, and mobile phones in an environmentally responsible way while ensuring the highest standards of data security.

All electronics accepted at Raleigh’s America Recycles Day will be prepared for reuse or recycling by Creative Recycling, Wake County’s electronics recycling partner. Creative Recycling follows strict standards in handling used electronics to ensure the complete removal of all personal data from a device before it is reused or recycled.

Creative Recycling uses two methods to erase data: data sanitization/erasure and destruction. Data sanitization, or erasure, uses a software-based overwriting method that permanently removes all traces of information, making data reconstruction impossible. This method is used if a device can be recycled. Hard drives are swiped three consecutive times, in compliance with federal standards. Data sanitization works with a variety of material including laptops, desktops, small servers and mobile devices. If a device cannot be recycled, Creative Recycling uses shredding technology to destroy the hard drive. Creative Recycling holds numerous certifications in electronics recycling, including e-Stewards® and R2/RIOS.

Raleigh’s America Recycles Day is scheduled from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday near Harris Teeter at North Hills Shopping Center.
