Know anyone with a sixth grader in the Triad?

About 1,400 sixth grade students could be suspended from schools in Guilford and Forsyth counties this week unless they get a vaccine against whooping cough or a booster shot.

Officials said about 750 six-graders in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and 650 students in Guilford County schools have not shown proof they have received the Tdap vaccination. Tdap provides protection against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, which is also known as pertussis. Close to half of the whooping cough cases in our state this year have originated in the Triad area.

State law allows schools to suspended students without up-to-date vaccines 30 days after the start of school. That deadline is Wednesday.
