The Orange County Department of Social Services (DSS) is announcing it will work with state officials to administer state grant funds for eligible flood survivors.

Families who have experienced losses will need to complete the application process with state officials who are available at the Disaster Outreach Center located at the University Mall in Chapel Hill. After they have completed the application process, state and local officials will work together to develop an individualized plan for assistance based on identified needs and available resources.

The Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Outreach Center will accept applications for loans to assist homeowners and renters with repairs or replacement of damaged or destroyed structures.

Storm survivors who do not qualify for a federal loan may be eligible for a state grant. Those dollars will be available through the Orange County Department of Social Services.

“We want to make every effort to streamline the process of assisting our residents with accessing funds they need to expedite the recovery from this unfortunate situation,” said Nancy Coston, director of Orange County DSS.  “As part of Orange County’s response to the flood, social workers from our agency have been working with more than 100 affected families. By coordinating with North Carolina Emergency Management, we will be able to maximize the available resources from Orange County, the state, the local nonprofits and the generous donors who have offered to help.”

“Orange County staff has been extremely responsive to those impacted by the recent flood,” said state Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry.  “They have been busy working with relief agencies and gathering all the necessary information from the flood survivors to help expedite any state and federal financial aid. This proactive approach will serve as a model for other communities as they recover from disasters.”

The Disaster Outreach Center can be reached at 919.903.0676. Members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community can call 800.877.8339.

Individuals and businesses unable to visit the Disaster Outreach Center can complete applications via the SBA Customer Service Center at 800.659.2955 or apply online at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela
