The State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to be careful as they enjoy the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. The holiday officially kicks off the summer vacation season in North Carolina. Gas prices are down which means more people will be on the highways, increasing the chance of traffic crashes.
According to AAA, automobile travel is expected to increase 1.2 percent from 2013 with 31.8 million travelers expected to hit the road. The share of people traveling by car is expected to fall slightly to 88.1 percent. Gas prices are expected
to be relatively similar to one year ago. The five-day Memorial Day holiday travel period is between Thursday and Monday.
Troopers will increase patrols on all interstates and major four lane highways during the holiday weekend. Speed is the leading cause of traffic collisions and fatalities in the state.
