Six decorated pianos will appear soon in locations around Downtown Raleigh. The best part — or maybe the worse part depending upon your perspective — is that folks will be allowed to play the pianos, regardless their skill level.

At its meeting on May 7, the Raleigh City Council voted to give Artsplosure permission to set up five of the pianos in various outdoor public spaces Downtown. A sixth piano will be placed in the courtyard at Marbles Kids Museum, 201 E. Hargett St. All the pianos will be on display May 15 through May 31. As part of Artsplosure’s Raleigh Street Piano Project, signs will be erected encouraging passers-by to stop and play the pianos.

The five other pianos will be placed at:

• Moore Square on the north end of the park;

• City Plaza on Charter Square in the 500 block of Fayetteville Street;

• Lichtin Plaza near South Street in front of the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts;

• City Market across from Big Ed’s restaurant outside Cobblestone Hall; and,

• The Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett St., under the outdoor rotunda (covered) area in front of the building.

All six of the pianos were destined to be thrown away. But a group of Artsplosure artists, all of whom have special needs, transformed the pianos into playable art, according to Artsplosure. The pianos will be part of the annual Artsplosure arts festival held May 17-19 in Moore Square.
