The Raleigh-Cary area came has tied for second in a Gallup poll asking residents if they “felt comfortable walking alone in their community at night.”
The poll was conducted among the 50 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the nation.
The Denver-Aurora, Colo., area tied Raleigh-Cary with 78 percent of respondents replying “yes” to the question. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area took first place with 80 percent responding in the affirmative.
Rounding out the top five were: Austin-Round Rock, Texas; Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Mass.; and Salt Lake City. All three areas tied at 77 percent.
The average level of perceived safety among those living in the largest MSAs is 71 percent. The national average is 72 percent.
Charlotte, the only other North Carolina MSA tested, fell below this average at 68 percent.
This marks the second year that the Raleigh-Cary area has tied for second place nationally in this poll.
