A street in downtown Durham has been blocked for several hours after a truck got stuck under a bridge overnight.

The low clearance bridge on Roxboro at Pettigrew streets claimed another victim around midnight Wednesday.

The driver of the box truck apparently didn’t see the clearance warnings and ripped the truck’s roof off when it went under the bridge. Several similar incidents have happened in the area over the years.

It took several hours for the pinned 18-wheeler’s cargo to be unloaded before crews could attempt to move the vehicle.

Roxboro Street is currently closed. It is unclear it if will be reopened in time for the morning commute.

Drivers going through downtown Durham are urged to avoid the area or take a detour on Pettigrew Street.
