Black Music Month originated in 1979. Jimmy Carter proclaimed the month of June as Black Music Month to celebrate the wonderful music, theĀ achievements, births, important timelines, events and to remember those we lost.
1. Katherine Dunham

1909:Dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham was born. She had one of the most successful dance careers in American and European theater of the 20th century, and directed her own dance company for many years. She has been called the “matriarch and queen mother of black dance.” She passed away in 2006 at age 96.
