Raleigh, NC – Kroger, one of the largest grocery chains in the United States, has announced plans to close 60 stores nationwide over the next 18 months. Among the closures is the Harris Teeter store located at 5563 Western Boulevard in Raleigh, which is set to shut its doors by July 20.

The decision to close these stores comes as part of Kroger’s strategy to address underperforming locations. Interim CEO Ron Sargent stated that the closures, which represent about 2% of Kroger’s 2,731 stores, are necessary to focus on more profitable operations and reinvest in the company’s growth. Kroger plans to allocate between $3.6 billion and $3.8 billion this year for capital expenditures, including the construction of new stores and the renovation of existing ones.

The Raleigh Harris Teeter location has been a staple for local residents, offering a wide range of groceries and services. However, the company has assured that employees at the closing stores will be offered roles at other nearby locations.

The news has sparked mixed reactions among Raleigh residents. While some are disappointed to lose a convenient shopping option, others are hopeful that the closure will lead to new opportunities for the area.

Kroger has not released a full list of the 60 stores slated for closure, but reports indicate that locations in Georgia, Illinois, Texas, and other states are also affected. The closures highlight the challenges faced by traditional grocery chains in an increasingly competitive market.

As the July 20 closure date approaches, customers are encouraged to visit the Western Boulevard Harris Teeter to take advantage of any remaining inventory and discounts.
